One of the most common questions we get asked at Pipelagging is whether standard pipe insulation can be used outside. The short answer is: it depends on the product. Some pipe insulation is suitable for outdoor use, some requires additional weatherproofing, and some will degrade rapidly if left exposed to the elements.
This guide explains which pipe insulation products can be used externally, what protection they need and the best solutions for outdoor pipework in UK conditions.
Why Outdoor Pipe Insulation is Different
Pipe insulation used outdoors faces challenges that indoor insulation does not:
- UV degradation — ultraviolet light from sunlight breaks down most foam insulation materials over time, causing them to crack, crumble and lose their insulating properties
- Rain and moisture — water ingress into open-cell insulation destroys its thermal performance and can cause corrosion on the pipe beneath
- Frost and freeze-thaw cycles — repeated freezing and thawing stresses the insulation material and any adhesive joints
- Wind can lift or dislodge insulation that is not properly secured or jacketed
- Physical damage — outdoor pipework is more exposed to accidental impact
Which Pipe Insulation Can Be Used Outside?
Standard Polyethylene Foam (Climaflex, Grey Foam) — Not Suitable for Long-Term Outdoor Use
Standard polyethylene foam pipe lagging — the grey foam sold in DIY stores — is not suitable for long-term outdoor use. It degrades rapidly when exposed to UV light, typically within one to two seasons. The outer skin cracks and crumbles, water enters the open-cell structure and the insulation loses its effectiveness entirely.
It can be used outdoors as a temporary measure but must be replaced or protected with weatherproof jacketing for any permanent installation.
Standard Armaflex — Requires UV Protection Outdoors
Standard Armaflex elastomeric pipe insulation is closed-cell and water-resistant, which makes it far superior to polyethylene foam for outdoor use. However, standard Armaflex is not UV-stable and will degrade if left exposed to direct sunlight without protection.
For outdoor installations, Armaflex must be protected with one of the following:
- Armaflex Tuffcoat — a factory-applied or site-applied UV-resistant coating specifically designed for Armaflex outdoor installations
- Aluminium jacketing — a metal outer casing that provides UV protection, weather resistance and mechanical protection
- UV-resistant paint — Armacell's own UV-resistant coating applied on site
Armaflex Tuffcoat — Designed for Outdoor Use
Armaflex Tuffcoat is Armacell's solution for outdoor pipe insulation. It is Armaflex elastomeric insulation with a factory-applied, UV-resistant, weatherproof outer coating that makes it suitable for fully exposed external installations without additional jacketing.
It is the professional standard for outdoor pipework including:
- External heating and cooling pipework on building facades
- Roof-mounted plant and pipework
- External condensate pipes
- Outdoor plant rooms and roof terraces

Armaflex HT Solar — For High-Temperature Outdoor Applications
Armaflex HT Solar is specifically designed for outdoor solar thermal pipework. It combines UV resistance with a high-temperature rating up to 150°C, making it the correct choice for solar collector pipework that is both exposed to sunlight and subject to high operating temperatures.
Foil-Faced Pipe Insulation — Limited Outdoor Use
Foil-faced pipe insulation (foam insulation with an aluminium foil outer facing) offers better UV resistance than plain foam but is still not ideal for long-term outdoor exposure. The foil facing can delaminate in wet conditions and the joints are vulnerable to water ingress. It is suitable for sheltered outdoor locations but not for fully exposed installations.
Mineral Wool with Jacketing — Suitable for Outdoor Use
Mineral wool pipe insulation (such as Rockwool) is not inherently weatherproof but is widely used outdoors when combined with aluminium or stainless steel jacketing. The jacketing provides the weather protection while the mineral wool provides the thermal insulation. This is the standard approach for large-diameter industrial and commercial pipework outdoors.

How Long Does Outdoor Pipe Insulation Last?
The lifespan of outdoor pipe insulation depends heavily on the product and the level of UV and weather exposure:
- Standard grey foam (unprotected) — 1 to 2 seasons before significant degradation
- Standard Armaflex (unprotected) — 2 to 5 years depending on UV exposure
- Armaflex Tuffcoat — 10+ years in typical UK outdoor conditions
- Armaflex with aluminium jacketing — 20+ years with correct installation
- Mineral wool with metal jacketing — 20+ years with correct installation
Installation Tips for Outdoor Pipe Insulation
- Seal all joints thoroughly — water ingress at joints is the most common cause of outdoor insulation failure. Use Armaflex 520 adhesive on all seams and butt joints
- Overlap joints away from prevailing rain — orient longitudinal seams to the underside of horizontal pipes
- Support the insulation — use pipe supports at regular intervals to prevent sagging and water pooling
- Inspect annually — check outdoor insulation each year for signs of UV degradation, joint failure or water ingress
- Use the right adhesive — ensure any adhesive used is rated for outdoor use and the expected temperature range
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use standard foam pipe lagging outside?
Only as a temporary measure. Standard polyethylene foam degrades rapidly in UV light and is not suitable for permanent outdoor installations. For any external pipework that needs to last, use Armaflex Tuffcoat or Armaflex with appropriate weatherproofing.
Does Armaflex need to be protected outdoors?
Yes. Standard Armaflex is not UV-stable and will degrade if left exposed to direct sunlight. It must be protected with Armaflex Tuffcoat, UV-resistant coating or aluminium jacketing for outdoor installations.
What is the best pipe insulation for outside use in the UK?
For most outdoor applications in the UK, Armaflex Tuffcoat is the best choice — it combines the excellent thermal and vapour resistance of Armaflex with a factory-applied weatherproof coating. For solar thermal pipework, use Armaflex HT Solar.
Can pipe insulation be used underground?
Standard pipe insulation is not suitable for direct burial underground. Specialist underground pipe insulation is required. Read our underground pipe insulation guide for full details.
How do I protect pipe insulation outdoors?
The most durable protection is aluminium jacketing, which provides UV resistance, weather resistance and mechanical protection. Armaflex Tuffcoat is a factory-applied alternative that avoids the need for site-applied jacketing on smaller diameter pipes.
