What is Armaflex Tuffcoat?

Armaflex Tuffcoat is Armacell's outdoor pipe insulation product. It is the same closed-cell elastomeric rubber foam as standard Armaflex, but with a factory-applied, UV-resistant, weatherproof outer coating that makes it suitable for permanent outdoor installation without additional jacketing or cladding.

The Tuffcoat coating is tough, flexible and resistant to UV light, rain, frost and moderate mechanical impact. It maintains its protective properties throughout the service life of the insulation — typically 15 to 20+ years in UK outdoor conditions.

Where to Use Armaflex Tuffcoat

Rooftop and External HVAC Pipework

Rooftop plant rooms, cooling towers, air handling units and external condensers all have pipework that runs in fully exposed conditions. Tuffcoat is the standard specification for these applications — it handles direct sunlight, wind-driven rain and temperature extremes without degrading.

External Chilled Water and Refrigeration Pipework

Chilled water and refrigeration pipework running externally between buildings or on building facades needs both thermal insulation and condensation control. Tuffcoat provides both, with the same closed-cell vapour barrier as standard Armaflex plus full weather protection.

External Heating Mains

Heating distribution pipework running between buildings or across external routes needs insulation that won't degrade in the weather. Tuffcoat is suitable for heating systems operating up to 105°C.

Condensate Pipes

Tuffcoat vs Armaflex HT Solar

Both Tuffcoat and Armaflex HT Solar are designed for outdoor use, but they serve different applications:

  • Choose Tuffcoat for standard outdoor HVAC, chilled water, heating and condensate pipework operating up to 105°C
  • Choose Armaflex HT Solar for solar thermal pipework operating up to 150°C, where the higher temperature rating is required

For most outdoor HVAC and building services applications, Tuffcoat is the correct choice. HT Solar is specifically for solar thermal systems and other high-temperature outdoor applications.

Available Sizes and Wall Thickness

Tuffcoat is available in pipe bore sizes from 6mm to 168mm, covering the full range of commercial and industrial pipework. Wall thickness options include 9mm, 13mm, 19mm, 25mm and 32mm.

How to Install Armaflex Tuffcoat

Tuffcoat is installed in the same way as standard Armaflex, with a few additional considerations for outdoor use.

  1. Prepare the pipe surface — ensure the pipe is clean, dry and free from rust or scale
  2. Cut to length — use a sharp knife and cut squarely. Cut ends will need sealing.
  3. Seal the longitudinal seam — apply Armaflex 520 adhesive to both faces of the slit, allow to become touch-dry, then press closed firmly
  4. Seal all butt joints — apply adhesive to both faces of every joint between lengths. This is critical outdoors — any unsealed joint is a water ingress point
  5. Seal cut ends and terminations — all cut edges must be sealed with adhesive or Armaflex Finish to prevent water ingress at termination points, wall penetrations and roof penetrations
  6. Use correct pipe supports — supports must not crush the insulation. Use insulated pipe supports or load-spreading saddles to maintain insulation continuity at support points

Underground Use

Correctly installed Tuffcoat systems typically last 15 to 20+ years in UK outdoor conditions. Annual inspection is recommended, focusing on joint integrity, sealant condition, mechanical damage and surface coating wear. The closed-cell structure means that even if the outer coating is superficially damaged, moisture absorption into the insulation body is minimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tuffcoat need jacketing?
No. The factory-applied Tuffcoat coating provides UV and weather resistance without additional jacketing. This makes it faster and more cost-effective to install than standard Armaflex with site-applied jacketing.

Can Tuffcoat be used on solar thermal pipework?
Standard Tuffcoat is rated to +105°C. For solar thermal systems where pipe temperatures can exceed this, use Armaflex HT Solar, which is rated to +150°C.

What adhesive should I use with Tuffcoat?
