How to Choose the Right Bore Size
Pipe insulation is sized by the internal bore diameter, which should match the outside diameter (OD) of your pipe. Standard UK copper pipe sizes and their corresponding insulation bore sizes are:
- 15mm copper pipe — use 15mm bore insulation
- 22mm copper pipe — use 22mm bore insulation
- 28mm copper pipe — use 28mm bore insulation
- 35mm copper pipe — use 35mm bore insulation
- 42mm copper pipe — use 42mm bore insulation
- 54mm copper pipe — use 54mm bore insulation
- 76mm, 108mm and larger — available for commercial and industrial pipework
For steel and plastic pipe, the OD differs from copper — contact our technical team if you’re unsure which bore size to order.
Wall Thickness
The correct wall thickness depends on the pipe service temperature, ambient conditions and the thermal performance required by UK building regulations (Part L) or CIBSE Guide C. As a general guide:
- Hot water pipework — typically 25mm wall thickness for pipes up to 28mm bore
- Cold water pipework — typically 13mm wall thickness for frost protection
- Chilled water and refrigeration — 19mm or 25mm wall thickness depending on pipe size and operating temperature
Available Materials
- Elastomeric foam (Armaflex, K-Flex) — flexible, easy to install, suitable for most domestic and commercial applications
- Mineral wool (Rockwool Rocklap) — non-combustible, for high-temperature and fire-critical applications
- Phenolic foam (Supaphen, Kingspan Kooltherm) — lowest thermal conductivity, ideal where insulation thickness is restricted
