ArmaFlex Rail SD Pipe Insulation | EN 45545-2 HL2, R1 | 2m Lengths
How to measure?
Pipe insulation sizes refer to the outside diameter of the pipe — not the bore (internal diameter).
|←— OD —→|Wrap a tape measure around the pipe, divide by π (3.14) to get the OD. Or use calipers across the outside of the pipe directly.
ArmaFlex Rail SD Pipe Insulation – EN 45545-2 HL2 Rail Insulation
ArmaFlex Rail SD is a highly flexible, dark-blue, closed-cell elastomeric foam insulation developed for railway vehicles. It combines low smoke generation and improved fire-retardant performance with built-in Microban antimicrobial protection.
Supplied as 2m tube lengths, Rail SD is designed for the insulation and protection of pipework in air-conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing systems in rail vehicles, helping to prevent condensation and reduce energy losses.
Rail fire performance
- EN 45545-2: Rail SD tubes in 6–25mm insulation thickness meet Hazard Levels HL1 and HL2 according to requirement set R1, and HL1, HL2 and HL3 according to R7.
- Practical fire behaviour: self-extinguishing, does not drip and does not spread flames.
- ECE R-118: passed Annex 6, 7 and 8 requirements for burning behaviour in motor vehicles.
- NFPA 130: 3–13mm material assessed to the referenced American rail fire tests.

Applications
Rail SD can be used to insulate and protect pipes and associated equipment in railway air-conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing systems. Armacell also specifies the material for thermal insulation in other areas of rail vehicles, including walls, ceilings and partitions where the relevant product format is appropriate.
Installation and specification notes
- Certified adhesives: ArmaFlex Ultima ECO550 and ArmaFlex Ultima 700.
- UV exposure: standard ArmaFlex Rail SD is not UV stable. Protection against UV radiation is required. Armacell recommends Rail SD-C where a protected coated rail insulation product is required.
- Self-adhesive products: maximum service temperature is +85°C for products with a self-adhesive layer.
- Storage: store in dry, clean rooms at normal relative humidity and 0°C to 35°C ambient temperature.
Available tube sizes
Choose the required pipe size and insulation thickness from the product options above. Standard Rail SD tubes are supplied in 2m lengths. Availability varies by size and some 19mm wall thickness combinations are manufacturer make-to-order.
Important: always confirm that the selected Rail SD product and thickness are suitable for the intended railway application, hazard level and requirement set.
