Why Underground Pipe Insulation Is Different
Standard pipe insulation is not suitable for underground use. Buried pipework requires insulation that can withstand:
- Ground moisture and water ingress — standard foam insulation absorbs water and loses thermal performance rapidly when wet
- Soil pressure and mechanical load — insulation must maintain its structure under backfill and compaction
- Long service life — underground installations are difficult and costly to access, so insulation must perform reliably for decades
- Temperature cycling — ground temperatures vary seasonally and insulation must accommodate expansion and contraction
