Domestic hot water (55–60°C)
Where the heat pump heats domestic hot water, the DHW distribution pipework must be insulated to BS 5422 minimum thicknesses for hot water service — the same as for a conventional boiler installation.
Refrigerant lines (ASHP)
For refrigerant lines, the heat pump manufacturer's installation manual specifies minimum insulation thicknesses. BS 5422 condensation control tables also apply to the suction line. The more demanding of the two specifications must be met.
Brine circuit (GSHP)

MCS Compliance — What Inspectors Check
An MCS inspection will typically check the following insulation requirements:
- All pipework in unheated spaces is insulated to BS 5422 minimum thicknesses
- Refrigerant lines are insulated to the manufacturer's specified minimum thickness
- Outdoor pipework is protected from UV degradation
- All joints, bends, valves, and fittings are fully insulated — no gaps
- The insulation specification matches the product datasheet λ value used in the BS 5422 calculation
- Buffer tank and cylinder connections are fully insulated
Common Compliance Failures
1. Using polyethylene foam on refrigerant or brine lines
Polyethylene foam is open-cell and provides no vapour barrier. It is not compliant for refrigerant or brine pipework.
2. Leaving outdoor insulation unprotected from UV
Standard elastomeric foam without UV protection will degrade within 12–24 months outdoors and will fail an MCS re-inspection.
3. Using the wrong λ value in the BS 5422 calculation
The λ value used must be the thermal conductivity of the insulation at the mean service temperature — not the value at 0°C. Check the manufacturer's datasheet for the correct value at your operating temperature.
4. Leaving fittings and valves uninsulated
Every valve, strainer, flexible connection, and fitting must be fully insulated. Leaving fittings uninsulated creates thermal bridges and is a common MCS inspection failure point.
5. Insufficient thickness on the suction line
The suction line has the greatest condensation risk and requires the greatest insulation thickness. Always check the manufacturer's specification — it may exceed the BS 5422 minimum.
Demonstrating Compliance
For building control sign-off under Part L, keep records of:
- The insulation product used (manufacturer, product name, λ value)
- The wall thickness installed on each pipe size
