Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tubolit pipe insulation?

Tubolit is a polyethylene foam pipe insulation manufactured by Armacell. It is one of the most widely used pipe lagging products in the UK, commonly specified for domestic hot and cold water pipes, central heating pipework and general plumbing applications. It is pre-slit for easy installation and available in a wide range of bore sizes and wall thicknesses.

What sizes does Tubolit come in?

Tubolit is available for all standard copper and plastic pipe sizes from 10mm to 114mm bore, in wall thicknesses of 9mm, 13mm, 19mm and 25mm. Standard lengths are 1m. Contact our team if you need sizes not shown online.

Does Tubolit comply with Part L?

Yes. Tubolit can be specified to meet Part L minimum insulation thickness requirements for domestic hot and cold water services. The required thickness depends on pipe size and location — our technical team can advise on the correct specification for your project.

Can Tubolit be used outdoors?

Standard Tubolit is not UV-resistant and will degrade if left exposed to sunlight outdoors. For external pipework, use a UV-resistant product such as Armaflex HT Solar, or protect Tubolit with a suitable cladding system. See our outdoor pipe insulation collection.

What is the difference between Tubolit and Armaflex?

Tubolit is an open-cell polyethylene foam, making it a cost-effective choice for domestic plumbing and heating. Armaflex is a closed-cell elastomeric rubber with higher vapour resistance and a wider temperature range, making it the correct choice for HVAC, chilled water and refrigeration applications. Both are manufactured by Armacell.

How do I install Tubolit pipe insulation?

Tubolit is pre-slit along its length. To install, open the slit, place it around the pipe and press closed. For standard Tubolit, secure with insulation tape at joints and ends. For Tubolit Self-Seal, the factory-applied adhesive strip closes the slit without additional tape. Cut to length with a sharp knife or scissors.
